Artist Statement
In my work I explore my own identity as a Christian man, a black person and an artist. It is my intention to expound on these issues throughout my practice. There are certain complexities about my identity I wish to express and answer through my paintings; they include the way form is captured, and the way that the emotion and spirit of the figure and objects reflect my own beliefs.
My primary motivation in my practice is to express in an apparent, vulnerable and emotional sense the humanity and the experience of the subject of the work . Fueled by my Christian faith, my work highlights the beauty, struggles, and emotions of life expressed, through unique, specific narratives and processes. These narratives are presented through a series of portraits and still lifes that are commentaries on the life of family, friends, and even me. The subjects of my work involve lighting, people, objects, and spaces. My processes manipulate color, light, and the position of people, objects and space within my paintings. My work acts as a series of wavelengths of light shining into a prism, converging at one point to meet a metaphorically spiritual space. That space is an expression of the spiritual essence and humanity of the subjects in my paintings, which I hope the viewer experiences.
